What is HYPNOSIS?

There are many myths about what hypnosis is and how it works. Most views are based on the Dracula or brain washing movies and stereotypes of old. This has left many to believe that only the weak willed or weak-minded can be hypnotized. This just isn’t true. In fact the more intelligent and strong willed you are, the easier it is to reach trance. No one can hypnotize you against your will. Also you can awaken from a trance whenever you deem necessary. You are always in control. Actually all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist is only your guide. As in stage hypnosis the hypnotist is the director, merely telling the players the scene they are in and letting them go with the “play”. Because the word sleep is used a lot in hypnosis people think that it is a state of unconsciousness. This is false. The trace is a state of relaxation with the mind fully awake and focused.

Well here are some definitions from leading reference materials

HYPNOSIS - Funk & Wagnall’s New World Encyclopedia

An altered state of consciousness and heightened responsiveness to suggestion; it may be induced in normal persons by a variety of methods and has been used in medical and psychiatric treatment. Most frequently hypnosis is brought about through the actions of an operator, the hypnotist, who engages the attention of a subject and assigns certain tasks to him or her while uttering monotonous, repetitive verbal commands; such tasks may include muscle relaxation, eye fixation, and arm levitation. Hypnosis also may be self-induced, by trained relaxation, concentration on one’s own breathing, or by a variety of monotonous practices and rituals that are found in many mystical, philosophical, and religious systems
